About "Закарпаття"...

A unique and westward leaning oblast of Ukraine

Закарпаття , or Transcarpathia , is located in the western-most regions of Ukraine.  You might try clicking here for the oblast tourism website.  In this Oblast, our organization is located on the centrally located street known as "Prospect Svobody", in the center of the oblast capital, Uzhhorod (Uzhgorod in Russian, or Ungvar in Hungarian).  The oblast is mountainous in some regions, and posseses many remote villages, family farms and ski resports.  The tallest mountain in Ukraine is not far.  The natural environment is a blessing.

Ukraine enjoys an extensive border with Russia, but our westward oblast of Transcarpathia is situated near Poland, Slovakia, Hungaria, Romania, and Moldova.  We have many ethnicities and languages here in the Carpathian mountains.

The wide mix of languages, culture, and mentalitet of the Tranacarpathians contributes to our unique disposition, as Ukraine's leaders (since former President Kuchma) and officials have committted the state and society of Ukraine toward integration with Europe, with the European Union.  Surely, ties with Russia, cultural and economic, will never be severed.  Afterall, about half of Ukraine's population prefers Russian as a primary language and has very strong cultural and ties to Russia.  Ukraine and its people struggle with issues of political, social, economic transitions.  Yet, the quest for prosperity and improvement in the standard of living is universal in Ukraine.  On this goal, all are united (though not all agree on the means).

Interested in Slavic languages, cultures, and adventurous travel?

  • Many people would like to visit and travel in Ukraine, Russia, and other countries of the former Soviet Union.  To best understand the rich heritage of Transcarpathia, one may need to venture into into the areas that are most remote.  Many would-be visitors of our oblast and our post-Soviet states are intimidated by a lack of knowledge of the languages.  We can help.
  • Many people that have an interest in Russian or Ukrainan languages could develop their skill by immersion into the slavic culture, and by actively practicing languages and growing to understand the culture(s).  Listening and speaking on an intensive basis, as much as time permits, can only enhance one's abilities.  You will see the modern aspects of society coexist with traditional life.   In some respects, Transcarpathia is really an open-air museum, a window into the past, and a door to Ukraine's future.  Learn what is not in your textbooks back home.  We can provide this opportunity for language development and an enlightened appreciation for various aspects of Ukrainian life in the Post-Soviet era.
  • We offer a variety of programs intended to provide intensive language training, supplemented by extentive excursions to both urban centers of interest and the most remote and magnificent mountrain scenery that Ukraine possesses.  Whether you are a mountain oriented ski/snowboard fanatic that thrives on adventure and fresh powder, or a retired person more interested in the historical, cultural aspects such as arts, music, museums, castles and 500 year old wooden churches, we can help you experience what interests you.  Have a look at our programs, which vary according to your needs.  We will build around your schedule. For example:
  1. Low on time?  Our 3 day crash course for "survival" and traveling in post-Soviet states might help to introduce you to the region.
  2. We can tailor any program to your needs, such as a 1, 2, or 3  week intensive program, including extensive excursions throughout the oblast according to season and personal interest (and cities such as Kiev or Lviv for example, as desired).  These programs are available each month and are scheduled according to your needs and limitations. Conversational emphasis.
  3. Our 6 week intensive summer session (offered twice per summer, with an advanced level for those staying for two sessions).  These include university level, credit and non-credit courses, from beginner level and up.  Intensive individual attention as needed.  Emphasis may be on conversational abilities, but committed to developing fundamentals of reading, writing, spelling and grammar emphasis.  Regular excursions each day and on weekends.  Homestay option.
  4. Our 4 week January winter session, same as above but compacted into an even more intensive regime, given the 4 week session is shorter.  Regular excusions each day and on weekends.
  5. Inquire as to your needs.  We will custom build language and cultural programs according to your needs.  Open to all individuals and organizations.
All Winter and Summer programs include options of university-level study with attention to reading, writing and speaking, and also a mainly conversational approach. We will accommodate your interests.
  • All programs that occur during the summer and winter months will be organized with the objective of making avaliable a number of very affordable daily and weekend trips.  In the winter, for example, ski-trips will be made...some nearby, some to remote and more primitive resorts, some to the largest ski development project currently being built (and operating), at "Bukavel".  Whether you are at a beginner or intermediate level, or whether you have your own iron, petex and wax for your skis, you will enjoy what adventures lay ahead.
For all, we can guarantee that your adventure will be anything but dull!  On all the language and culture programs, you will have the opportunity to be as active  as you like or just relax on a bench by the river Uzh in the center of Uzhgorod and talk with your new friends. With any luck, you may return home dreaming in a slavic  language.

He was on the scene long before Al Gore thought he invented the intenet... working out of a two car garage, fixing my IMB 8086 before George Bush "the 1st" was telling us to read his lips about "no new taxes".  Am I still under warranty Phil?  Thanks guys.  That's the way you do it...
